Diabetic Testing at Home
Diabetes is a disease that must be watched carefully. You can do any number of normal activities when you are diagnosed with diabetes, but you must use an added measure of caution and be sure to eat appropriately, drink adequately, and test yourself on a regular basis.
The method most often used for home testing is with the use of a blood glucose monitor. You must use a sterile lancet to prick your finger. You will then place a drop of blood on a diabetic test strip. The strip will be placed into the monitor, which works electronically to provide you with the numbers you need to determine whether your blood sugar is at a healthy level or if you need to make an adjustment.
Blood glucose meters are not all the same. They have different features. Some are much easier to use and to read than others. Those with blindness or the inability to read can use the kind of meter that speaks to you. You'll get spoken instructions to follow instead of written ones or those presented on the electronic screen readout.
Your readings will be stored within the machine's memory and after a period of time you can see what the average reading is. They are portable, fast, and not as expensive as they once were. The test strips that you will use for your meter must be the exact kind that works with that meter. If you use just any strip, you could get an inaccurate reading and that could spell trouble.
