Genital warts are also commonly known as venereal warts or condyloma acuminate. It is caused by a virus called human papillomavirus and is one of the most commonly sexually transmitted disease. This disease can affect both men and women and at any age. The warts occur in the genital and anal region of women. Warts in women are contagious and you are able to get to receive it by sexual contact by a person that already has it.

HPV and the human papillomavirus is the cause of genital warts in women. There are numerous types of HPVs. HPV-6 and HPV-11 are the most common types and it is responsible for about 90% of the genital warts caused.

Below are some symptoms of genital warts in women:

1. There are bumps, may cause itching and some discharge.

2. The warts range from different sized. They are from 1 mm to 1 cm when they join together.

3. Warts can also be found in more than on area.

4. A history of STDs may be relevant.

When it comes to men, these warts can affect the penis, urethra, scrotum and rectal area. The lesions may be elevated or flat hidden by hair. They are sometimes raised growths, cauliflower like appearance or soft. Genital warts in women may occur on moist areas like the vagina opening. Warts can occur without any symptoms or they experience bleeding after having sex.

It is recommended that you see the doctor for warts. The diagnosis is done according to the history and appearance of the warts. You can apply acetic acid solution to the affected area so it becomes white in color. A pap smear test is done to detect HPV presence and abnormal cells in the cervix. A biopsy is performed if the warts reappear after getting treated.

Many treatments are available but none of these are considered 100 percent effective in removing the warts since it is not possible to remove the infection caused by HPV totally. The warts in women may subside and go away on their own within few months.
